From home decor, to kid clothes and toys, thrift stores, flea markets and garage sales are a great source to make good bargains!

After moving to the San Francisco Bay Area we bought most of our furnitures on Craigslist, but lots of the smaller, decorative things come from garage sales, flea markets or thrift stores such as the candle holders, decorative bowls or the art work (see below picture). Browsing the shelves of thrift stores is a fun way to go treasure hunting. Even stopping at garage, moving or estate sales or visit the flea market with friends can be a very funny activity. My favorite flea markets are the Santa Cruz Flea Market and the Alameda Point Antiques Market (next one is Oct 7!).

If going to the Santa Cruz flea market, plan an early visit as most people start packing up around 12 PM. And why not spend the rest of the day at the beach?! The Alameda Point Antiques is the largest antiques show in Northern California. It is worth going just for the beautiful setting – views of the San Francisco skyline to one side and impressive container ships to the other – and to get home décor ideas by the nicely decorated stalls.

Here are some great flea markets in and around the San Francisco Bay Area:

• Santa Cruz Flea Market (2280 Soquel Dr, Santa Cruz, CA 95065), Sat and Sun 8-2 PM – It is best to be there before 12 PM!
Alameda Point Antiques Fair (2900 Navy Way, Alameda, CA 94501), 1st Sunday of each month, 6 AM – 3 PM
Candlestick Park Antiques & Collectibles Faire (602 Jamestown Avenue, San Francisco, California 94124), 3rd Sunday each month
De Anza College: Flea Market (21250 Stevens Creek Blvd, Cupertino), 1 Sat. each month

Find out about garage sales by following signs on the street or look for garage or moving sales on craigslist. Also, there is a citywide garage sale in Palo Alto every two years. It is usually the first weekend in June, unfortunately only every 2 years. The next one should be on the first weekend in June 2013. So mark your calendars!
